If you are missing a single tooth or several in a row, then a porcelain fixed bridge may be the best option for you.

The importance of replace missing teeth

Besides the obvious impact on your appearance, missing teeth can become a significant problem for your oral health over time. Each of your teeth serves a purpose and when even one is missing, its effects can be far-reaching.

  • Missing teeth impact your bite which can lead to a disruption in balance and increase the stress on remaining teeth. Over time, this can cause wear and tear on the teeth and the need for further restorations.
  • Missing teeth increase the risk for gum disease, which is a progressive dental disease that can be difficult and costly to treat. Furthermore, gum disease has been linked to an increased risk of other health issues such as strokes, diabetes, and heart attacks.
  • Missing teeth causes your face to look sunken in, prematurely aging your appearance.

Types of dental bridges to fix missing teeth

There are several different types of dental bridges available and determining which one is right for you depends on several factors such as budget, personal preferences, and needs.

  • Traditional fixed bridges – With this type of restoration, crowns are placed on top of the teeth located on each side of the gap to anchor the bridge. False teeth are then attached to the crowns to fill in the gap.
  • Implant-supported bridges – With this type of restoration, implants are placed into the bone to anchor the bridge.
  • Removable bridges – With this type of restoration, the bridge is held in place with clasps or attachments.

Placing a traditional permanent bridge or a removable bridge typically takes two appointments. With a fixed bridge, the surrounding teeth are prepared for the dental crowns and impressions are taken for custom fabrication of your bridge. Once it’s complete you will return to the office for placement.

The implant-supported bridge option is longer because once the implants are in place, they have to fuse with the bone to heal before the bridge can be attached. The entire process usually takes a few months, but many patients find it worth the wait for additional functionality and durability.
