Porcelain Inlays and Onlays Treatment

When a tooth sustains extensive damage to the biting surfaces, it may not require a restoration that’s more substantial than a traditional dental filling. When this happens, Fallbrook Dentist offers patients in Fallbrook, CA porcelain inlays and onlays to repair the damage.

What are porcelain inlays and onlays

Nearly everyone is familiar with the process for traditional dental fillings. During the procedure, which typically only requires a single visit, the dentist removes the damaged area of the tooth and cleans it out before filling and sealing the area. This process involves removing part of the natural tooth structure which has an impact on the future strength and functionality of the tooth. It is for this reason that we may recommend a porcelain inlay or onlay when the tooth has significant damage. Inlay and onlya restorations increase the strength of a damaged tooth which makes them a perfect option for tooth damage that is too extensive for a filling, but not extensive enough for a dental crown. Inlays and onlays are also often recommended when an old restoration needs to be replaced.

Inlays – used to repair the area between the cusps of the tooth

Onlays – used to repair the area that includes the cusps

The inlay and onlay process

Having an inlay or onlay placed usually requires two separate visits to Fallbrook Dentist. During the first visit, the decayed or damaged area of the tooth is removed and then the tooth is prepared for the restoration. Impressions are taken of the tooth so that the inlay or onlay can be custom-made at the dental lab and temporary sealant is placed over the tooth. Once the restoration is ready at our office, you will return to have the sealant removed and the inlay or onlay checked for proper fit. If everything looks good, it will be bonded to the tooth and then smoothed and polished so it looks and feels natural.
