How often should I visit the dentist?
It is generally advised that all patients visit us at least two times per year or once every six months. During these visits, Dr. Moran will evaluate the condition of your teeth, gums, and other oral tissues. Our hygienists also expertly clean your teeth and remove what cannot be removed with a standard toothbrush and floss: stubborn plaque build-up or tartar.
Why would Dr. Moran recommend more frequent check-ups for me or a family member?
Dr. Moran may want to conduct check-ups more often if you are at increased risk for developing gum disease, tooth decay, oral cancer, or other problems that threaten your mouth (and the rest of you!). Some patients with existing gum disease may also require cleanings more frequently. These additional visits may also be necessary to evaluate how well treatments or other suggested interventions are working.
When should I start to bring my child to your office?
It is never “too early” to practice excellent dental habits! Check-ups are an essential habit that promotes a lifetime of oral health. With that being said, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that the first dental visit occur within six months of the first tooth peeking through or by no later than your child’s first birthday.
I take great care of my teeth and gums. Why do I need to visit you every six months, still?
Great question! Congrats on taking such good care of your teeth! You really cannot have one without the other – professional care and home care go hand in hand. Maintaining professional cleanings at our office is essential because destructive plaque is constantly forming on the teeth. Even the best brushers and flossers cannot keep up with it. Once hardened, only our trained hygienists, with their special dental tools, can remove this stubborn build-up (tartar or calculus). Regular visits are also essential to “catch” problems before they produce symptoms, progress undetected, and cause traumatic damage that requires aggressive and/or costly restorative care.

What symptoms should I watch for?
It is always better to see you when your teeth and gums are healthy and feel fine. However, it is important to contact us right away if you notice changes, such as tooth discoloration, redder than usual gums, puffy gums, persistent bad breath, heightened tooth sensitivity, and gums that hurt or are tender when you touch them. Typically, early-stage enamel damage or gum disease (inflammation) are notoriously “silent’ or asymptomatic. Patients may only notice some of the changes after these conditions have progressed and damage has occurred that requires treatment. So, contact your friends at the office of James M. Moran, DDS, immediately if you have concerns over a tooth or another part of your smile.
