Porcelain Crowns (Caps)

Porcelain crowns are a type of restoration that can give a tooth back its natural appearance and function. They are known for their strength, versatility, and appearance, which make them an excellent option for many patients. At Fallbrook Dentist, we use porcelain crowns in many different scenarios to leave our patients with a durable restoration that they can count on for many years.

What are porcelain crowns?

All dental crowns are essentially a cap that is placed over the visible portion of the tooth above the gumline. Porcelain teeth caps are used because the ceramic material is similar in luster and translucency to natural tooth enamel but also strong enough to withstand the force of biting and chewing. Porcelain crowns are custom fabricated to match nearby teeth so that they blend in seamlessly within your smile.

Reasons for porcelain crowns

One of the most common reasons for needing a porcelain crown is extensive tooth decay. When decay is caught early, it can often be remedied with a traditional filling. However, when it is left untreated, it can result in damage that covers too large an area for a traditional filling. Other reasons may include:

  • Repairing a tooth that has cracked or broken
  • Protecting and strengthening a tooth after root canal therapy
  • Enhancing the appearance of a tooth that has cosmetic issues
  • Completing a dental implant to restore tooth loss
  • Holding a dental bridge securely in place

The dental crown process

Having a crown placed on your teeth typically requires two visits. During the first visit, any tooth decay is removed, and the tooth is prepared for the placement of the dental crown. Next, impressions are taken to be sent off to the lab for custom fabrication. A temporary crown is then placed on top of the tooth to protect while your permanent crown is being made. Once your permanent crown is ready, you can return to the office where it will be checked for proper fit before it is bonded securely into place.

At the office of Dr. James Moran, DDS, we use state of the art equipment and high-quality dental laboratories so you can ensure your crown will look beautiful and last a long time. If you live in the Fallbrook, CA call us at (760) 284-8477 to book an appointment.
