Porcelain Inlays and Onlays

Repair damaged teeth with Porcelain Inlays and Onlays

Having healthy teeth is a considerable boost for your confidence and overall health. Unfortunately, cracks, chips, and decay may compromise the integrity of your teeth, leading to further damage and possible infection. But with restorative dentistry, you don’t have to watch the health of your teeth fade away. Procedures like porcelain inlays and onlays from James M. Moran DDS in Fallbrook, California, can restore your oral health, reviving your smile once more.

What are inlays and onlays?

Inlays or onlays are dental appliances installed on damaged teeth to improve their performance and are also known as partial crowns or dental fillings. These partial crowns are used when the damage is too big for a typical filling or too small for a dental crown.

Inlays are used to fill small fissures that can’t be repaired with a filling and are placed on the chewing surface of the damaged tooth. They don’t affect the tooth’s cusps. Onlays are used when your tooth has extensive damage and are perfect for restoring your tooth when there is damage to both the chewing surface and the cusps.

While inlays and onlays can be made from composite resin and gold, we prefer porcelain because it’s stain-resistant and blends perfectly with the rest of your teeth.

Porcelain inlays and onlays procedure

After Dr. James Moran establishes that an inlay or onlay can restore your tooth, we administer anesthesia and remove the damaged area. If there is an old filling, this will be removed first. After cleaning the prepped tooth, it’s smoothed out and filed to accommodate the filling.

Next, we take your bite impressions and send the images to a dental lab to create your restoration. Meanwhile, we install a temporary restoration to protect your prepped teeth as you wait for your permanent indirect filling.

In the second visit, we will remove the temporary restoration and try your inlay or onlay for a proper fit. If all is well, the indirect filling will be bonded onto your tooth, smoothed, and then polished for a natural look.
