Dentures and Partial Dentures Procedures

Permanent tooth loss affects many aspects of your life – it can make it difficult to eat, uncomfortable speaking, and embarrassing to smile. Fortunately, options for tooth replacement have come a long way in recent years, making it possible to restore functionality and esthetics to your smile. If you are already missing teeth or facing extractions, the team at the office of James Moran, DDS in Fallbrook, CA, can help you with options for full and partial dentures.

Dentures explained

Dentures are removable prosthetics that fill in the spaces after tooth loss. There are two main categories of dentures: complete (full) and partial. Patients will need complete dentures if all teeth within the arch are missing, or partial dentures are used when only a portion of teeth are missing.

  • Full dentures – Full dentures are either conventional or immediate. Conventional dentures are made from impressions taken after any extractions have been completed and the area has healed. Immediate dentures are made before extractions and placed immediately after teeth are removed. Because the size and shape of the tissue will change during healing, immediate dentures will need to be adjusted several times.
  • Partial dentures – Partial dentures or dental bridges are used when some healthy teeth remain in the smile. Removable partial dentures are held in place with a metal framework and a plastic, gum-colored base. Fixed bridges are held in place with dental crowns attached to teeth on either side of the gap.

Denture alternatives

Individuals who are interested in more stability and longevity in their tooth replacement options can turn to dental implants. Implants are screw-like posts that are placed into the jawbone to support a dental prosthetic. Dental implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth, to support a bridge, or to secure dentures in place.

The dentures process

Once we determine what type of tooth replacement you need, having dentures made and placed occurs over several appointments. Most cases will involve the following steps:

  • Impressions and measurements are taken to provide dimensions for your restoration.
  • Models of the denture are made and placed during a try-in to check for accurate size, fit, and shape.
  • The final denture is made and double-checked for fit.
  • Ongoing adjustments can be made.

Getting used to your dentures

Like other dental restorations, it will take some time to get used to your dentures. You may have to practice speaking and eating and using your muscles to keep them in place. Over time, your mouth will adjust, and it will get easier.
